Jenny Chi, vocal
At the age of seven, the Swiss singer (born 1975) with Chinese roots began
taking lessons on the piano and was singing in the Zurich children’s choir; she
began playing the guitar as an autodidact. In her late teens, Jenny Chi dis-
covered her love for Bossa Nova. The wistful, melancholy mood of the music
immediately enthralled her. After college, she continued her musical education
in classical and jazz singing and in percussion; she participated as lead singer
in several Brazilian and jazz bands (i.e. Bem Bossa, Victor’s Brazilian Affair, Trio
Zwo). She then spent half a year traveling through Brazil.
Upon her return
to Switzerland she formed her own band in 1999, the Bossa Nova quartet
ChiBossa. The band interprets the music of composers such as Ary Barroso,
Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque, and adds some of her own compositions.
February 2007 sees the release of her first CD entitled "Jenny Chi &
ChiBossa", featuring twelve old Bossa Nova gems by composers such as
Chico Buarque, Tom Jobim, Ary Barroso and Baden Powell, plus a beautifully
delicate self penned composition with her guitarist, Ademir Cândido.
These are live recordings and the listener has the feeling of sitting with
the band and witnessing first hand their enchanting raw intimacy and authenticity.
